The existing Intensive Care Unit no longer fully supported the functions for the state of the art services the hospital provided. Storage was insufficient, lighting was inefficient and the nurse station no longer met ergonomic standards for new computers and equipment. Some materials, such as floors and cabinets, were not easily cleaned and were showing their age. The overall ambience was sterile and did little to relieve stress for staff.
